Mit'a System

The Mit'a system, was a labor system used by the Incan empire, but was later adapted by the Spanish conquistadors, as a form of free labor. They used the natives like slaves, on their mines and farms. The Incas used the system as form of "labor tax". When the spaniards discovered a huge silver mine in Potosi, a city in modern day Bolivia, they abused the natives and made them work for long periods of time, with harsh working conditions and low wages.
